Who are we?

New Zealand School Trustees Association (NZSTA) is a not for profit and membership-based national organisation representing the interests of its member boards.

NZSTA is the most influential leader of effective school governance in Aotearoa, embodying the intent of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Its vision is to lead and strengthen school governance in New Zealand to ensure that all schools are effectively governed so that every student realises their highest possible educational potential.

Details about the role

Reporting to the Director Advisory and Support Centre, you will be responsible for advising, supporting and providing school boards and their delegates with timely and accurate advice on governance enquiries, promoting effective governance policies and practice within schools and ensuring that boards meet their legal obligations. Key responsibilities include:

  • Acting as a first port of call for school boards seeking governance advice in relation to education legislation, including referral of enquiries to the regional governance advisors
  • Effective case management on a broad range of governance queries
  • Research solutions to enquiries and recommend appropriate actions to resolve cases
  • Providing assistance for the preparation and review of governance resources and articles as required
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders: national and regional teams, and a wide cross-section of school members across NZ
  • Support the wider Advisory and Support Centre team

No one day will be the same in this role – the variety and breadth of this role as well as opportunity to work on a board range of governance enquires will keep you busy and stimulated. The advice and support you provide will directly strengthen school boards and improve the overall quality of governance and education provided to students across New Zealand.

This is a permanent full-time position (40 hours per week), based in our national office on Lambton Quay, Wellington. Flexible working arrangements including work from home are also a consideration for the role.

  • Proven governance experience working in a similar role
  • A strong customer service ethos
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels
  • Strong intuition with good judgement and decision-making capabilities
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proven ability to participate as a positive, effective team member
  • Calm under pressure, resilient and empathetic disposition to deal with a wide range of enquiries with varying complexities
  • A high degree of professional integrity and ability to remain impartial and confidential
  • Sound computer literacy and proficiency in MS Office Suite
  • Having served or currently serving as a board member would be advantageous
